District Licensing for great crested newts – 5 Years In

Our Head of Science Dr Andrew Buxton was delighted to present some early analysis of the outcomes of the first five years of District Licencing across the south midlands. He presented data that showed the scheme is not just meeting its legal objectives but delivering a statistically significant improvement in the conservation status of great crested newts at the landscape level.

At the time of the meeting District Licensing for great crested newts, provided by NatureSpace Partnership and The Newt Conservation Partnership had been operational for six years.

Following the 2023 monitoring programme, a period of evaluation was started to examine and critically review the first five years of the scheme’s operation, to consider the outcomes for great crested newts, developers, local authorities and the wider environment. Dr Buxton explored the outcomes in terms of lost and gained habitat, pond occupancy of created habitat and how this compared to the expected background occupancy levels for an area.

Dr Buxton’s presentation also took a deeper dive into areas of analysis exploring the key Favourable Conservation Status objectives as a result of works undertaken under the District Licence, drilling down into what this meant at the very local scale in the areas surrounding both impact and compensation sites.
