How to Apply
Our Stacked Biodiversity Net Gain scheme uses compensation habitat for great crested newts to contribute toward your Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements – ensuring you are not paying for the same impact twice.
Our sector-first BNG scheme funds high-quality, specialist freshwater habitats that also embed species-specific management. Ecosystems are considered at a landscape scale to maximise recovery potential.

-
Step 2 – Receive your initial quote
Once we’ve reviewed your application, we’ll confirm that we have all the information needed to proceed. You’ll then receive an initial quote for the required BNG units. Note: this fee may be reduced later if the development also uses the District Licensing Scheme for great crested newts and therefore utilises our Stacked BNG package.
At this stage we’ll discuss the compensation options available to you. Every project is unique, so we tailor our approach to your needs, impacts and location.
-
Step 3 – Pay your deposit and receive a draft NatureSpace report
After you agree to proceed, we’ll send you an invoice for the deposit (10% of your quote). Once paid, your compensation will be reserved ahead of you securing planning permission.
We’ll produce a draft BNG Report at this stage, which you can submit alongside your planning application as supporting evidence for Local Planning Authorities. This report demonstrates how you intend to secure your BNG units and meet additionality requirements.
-
Step 4 – Enter planning
Join our District Licensing Scheme for great crested newts and receive an updated, reduced BNG quote.
If great crested newts are a required consideration in planning, we would strongly recommend using our District Licensing Scheme to enable stacking with BNG. This will lower your BNG fee by utilising the compensation created for you through the Scheme. You can read more about how this works here.
We will work closely with you and your ecologists throughout the planning process, making reasonable adjustments to your compensation package as your development plans evolve.
-
Receive planning permission and pay your remaining fee
After receiving planning permission, we’ll send you an invoice for the remaining balance. This is calculated as either your initial quote or your revised stacked quote, minus the deposit already paid.
We’ll issue a final NatureSpace BNG Report after receipt of the final balance and once we have assigned units to your development on the Natural England register. This report can be used as supporting evidence alongside your Biodiversity Net Gain plan to discharge your Biodiversity Net Gain condition.
If you have any questions or need support at any stage, our team is ready to help.
