A quicker, cheaper and more reliable way of dealing with great crested newts
District Licensing is now
available to developers and
Local Planning Authorities
‘District Licensing’ removes all the uncertainties and delays of the old licensing system, as there’s no need for newt surveys or complicated mitigation plans.
For the payment of a fixed licence fee, calculated according to the impact of the development on newts, the developer is provided with a certificate which is accepted by the Planning Authority as meeting all the developer’s great crested newt responsibilities.
The scheme pays for a conservation strategy that creates four new ponds for every newt pond lost, bringing huge benefits for great crested newts and lots of other wildlife.
The whole process is simpler, cheaper and quicker for developers and planners, and much better for newts. NatureSpace will be delivering this scheme in partnership with Local Planning Authorities in many parts of England.
We recently had the chance to visit some of the amazing ponds made by the SMNCP, as part of the District Licence habitat creation scheme. They have created ~40 ponds in 2018 alone and showed us ponds made by the FHT in previous schemes to show how the habitat progresses over time. Many thanks to the SMNCP for all their hard work!
